Fall of 8chan

Last edited/updated: 24th of May, 2020 (changelog at the bottom). IMPORTANT: be sure to go read the sources as they often have more detailed and specific information. This is just a tl;dr of all events. Some sources come from smuglo's /support/ board since information gathering for this document had home there. The Fall of 8chan as we know it. - 3rd and 4th of August, 2019 The El Paso Texas Walmart shooting happens. The shooter posts his manifesto on Instagram, someone reposts it on 8chan /pol/. Feds are alerted, panic ensues. On /pol/, various users seems to instigate violence, just as there is the suspicion that feds might watch over the board (https://archive.is/nesxK). Overall the circumstances of this are very unclear and speculations are that this was made on purpose by someone to rise a crusade against the site. Said shaming campaign happens, as many voices rise up to protest against the existence of 8chan, labeled as a cesspool of extremists and the worst people on the internet. Even by mass media, who underline how 3 shootings have been announced in the past months on /pol/. This accusation though is misleading, as in most cases the manifesto was posted AFTER the shooting, by someone else. HotWheels, who has a notorious hatred for 8chan and Jim Watkins, calls out first on twitter (https://archive.is/8Wgkg) then in an interview for the shutdown of the site, which is again labeled as the home of hate speech and "a megaphone for shooters". Sources: the interview (https://archive.is/WlARe) and reactions/talk about it on kiwifarms (https://archive.is/OcL0E). Even mass media all over the world mention 8chan, airing reports about it in the news. Ron and Jim first don't comment. But Ron works on a way to delete faster such hateful content by adding a new mod tool. 8chan experiences some technical issue and a short downtime because of hardware upgrades against the incoming DDoS attacks Ron expects this will follow. - 5th of August, 2019 CNN also mentions these news and how 8chan is involved in it, still wrongly claiming that the shooter posted the manifesto on the site while it was posted on Instagram originally (https://archive.is/lfCgk). Pressed by the public, Cloudflare's CEO announces the removal of 8chan from their DDoS protection service in two hours. Ron puts a sitewide announcement to alert everyone to seek shelther. To be noted, this is not the direct reason of 8chan going offline, but it is the first cause because without DDoS protection the attacks rapidly kill the site and keep it from getting back online. Sources: statement of Cloudflare's CEO (https://archive.is/sxAPM) and reactions on /pol/ (https://archive.is/QYyvP and https://archive.is/kN5Aj). After about 20 minutes 8chan announced Cloudflare would shut off service to the site, /cow/ setups a bunker site at alogs.theguntretort.com. The name is then changed with votes to JulayWorld (https://archive.is/yoiJC https://archive.is/YShpQ). Ron tries to restore the site, failing because of the attacks that keep coming through. Voxility then kicks 8chan out of their service, deplatforming it. - 6th of August, 2019 Jim uploads a video on his YT channel about all that happened, expressing his condolences for the victims of the shooting and defending 8chan as a free speech site, where law is enforced. He also points out how the claims of the shooter posting his manifesto on /pol/ are false. Source: https://archive.org/details/sorry-for-the-inconvenience_202005 -------------------- In the following weeks, 8chan tries to get back but unsuccessfully: no one wants to host them and the DDoS attacks never cease. Most communities, seeing how late 8chan is into coming back, move to bunkers or under other small imageboard sites. Smuglo.li, which originally was just the bunker for 8chan's /a/, starts to accept other boards under his domain as refugees. In a similar fashion, JulayWorld (which was just the /cow/ bunker) starts accepting refugee boards. /v/'s owner Mark moves to the bunker he made at vch.moe. After some time (around the end of August), the webring is made to connect all major site alternatives to 8kun together: Fatchan, JulayWorld, Smuglo.li, Anon.cafe, Prolikewoah (/animu/'s bunker), Frchan. The fans around "Q" and his legacy decide to wait for the site to be back instead, as there is no way to prove Q's authenticity in posts outside of 8chan. -------------------- - 3rd of September, 2019 Mark posts a public statement on vch.moe to announce that he has been an employee under Ron and Jim since quite some time (around the end of 2016) because he was desperate for money as he had no income. He was put in charge of the board claims and he was also the "community manager" for a brief period of time back when Ron succeeded HW in the site technical support after the Infinity Next fiasco. He is also a reporter on /newsplus/. It all was kept a secret because Ron feared a riot and exodus out of this, even though Mark disagreed. Now though it is necessary to reveal them as HotWheels blackmailed Mark and revealed these info on IRC. Eight hours later, HW tweets about this publicly. Sources: Thread on vch (https://archive.is/08QCC) and tweet of HW (https://archive.is/mHKFX). - 5th of September, 2019 Jim is called by the House Homeland Security Committee to speak at a closed door congressional deposition about the involvement of his company NT Technology and 8chan in the El Paso shooting, and to testify about how the website plans to tackle "the proliferation of extremist content, including white supremacist content". He underlines once again how the site "has never tolerated illegal speech and has a consistent track record of working with law enforcement agencies when appropriate". Source: https://archive.is/SO55A -------------------- It is decided to rebrand 8chan, and call it 8kun, to avoid the infamous aura media have placed on that name (https://archive.org/details/8kun-coming-soon). A campaign to promote the transparency of the new site and its will to be in accordance with legality is made. Still, during October 8kun is brought up and then immediately taken down multiple times, both from deplatforming caused by reports or by DDoS attacks. Source: list of IPs 8kun tried (https://archive.is/Vh3yc). About HotWheels: there are lots that can be said about how his hatred for Jim and 8chan grew over time, starting from the Infinity Next fiasco. I'll leave a long thread here with logs from HW's IRC chats and interesting discussion about it all: https://archive.is/r7pZ9 Also, his twitter is full of posts attacking Jim and 8chan/8kun. Here's just a few: https://archive.is/ric3m -------------------- - 14th of October, 2019 Jim has an hearing at the Philippines Court for the petition he filed about his naturalization as a Philippine citizen. HW hears about it, comes to the Court and submits a written and oral statement against him. Jim is not present. The hearing is postponed to February 2020. Sources: https://archive.is/TTt4O https://archive.is/ZNb8q https://archive.is/65Pdh - 22nd of October, 2019 HW tweets about Mark: he reveals that the income Jim gives him is used to fund vch.moe, which is in theory a competitor of 8kun. This, together with the previous tweet about his employment by Jim, proves also that Mark was hanging out with HW in his IRC during this period of time. Source: https://archive.is/zsSEj - 26th of October, 2019 Mark says that the reason why 8chan is still not back is because Ron is too busy developing Project Odin, and advances doubts about the platforms they are trying to use. Source: https://archive.is/p0ddo - 4th of November, 2019 8kun gets back online. Site is very unstable at first and borderline unusable. Some communities (like /a/) decide to not get back and remain on the bunkers for now, which are organized together and connected with the webring. Others get back instead, like the Q userbase. Certain aspects of the site have changed: now every post has a disclaimer under it to make clear how any aspect of the post is not responsibility of the administration. faggottext is changed to pinktext and (((echoes))) is removed entirely from the site. Finally, there are now a SHUTITDOWN function (read-only mode for the board) and a Restriction function (disables image posting, posting through Tor, and blocks link to other websites. The board is also unindexed and CAPTCHA per post is enabled) that globals and the admins can use. Source: 8kun FAQ (https://archive.is/SmH0z). Mark closes vch.moe and gets back on 8kun with all the /v/ anons. -------------------- Ron announces that the old data and boards will be migrated on 8kun. Said board migration is programmed in two phases: a first phase, where all the BOs have to email the claims address with their shared secret to ask for their board to be migrated. Then, in phase two, all the remaining boards will be migrated. The second phase is announced to start around December and to end possibly before the end of the year. Source: (NEEDED). Mark is put in charge of answering requests for board migrations from 8chan to 8kun. Tenicu (/a/'s BO) requests and obtains board migration, but the community stays on smuglo for now, until the site is more stable. -------------------- - December 2019 The first issues with board migration surface: the site is unstable and the operation is slow and difficult. Posting or captcha are broken often for hours. User post deletion is non-functional and always returns "you didn't make a post". This issue is reported but never fixed (and it will remain that way until at least February). Ron seems more interested into following the development of Project Odin and doesn't communicate at all about updates on board migration status or when phase two will start. Finally, in mid December, Ron announces that phase two is cancelled, without any reason or explanation. Adding to this, when asked about when /pol/ will be migrated, Ron answers that the BO has to request it when he knows the board is a global one. In general, the attitude of Ron and the administration is totally dismissive and even outright incompetent. Source: Post no.373388 in https://archive.is/m729P - 17th of January, 2020 On smuglo, /a/ starts to think of making the 8kun board the bunker, and stay on smuglo as their new main site. Reasons being not having a real reason to go back, and the whole bunch of tech issues the site is having (https://archive.is/RNl59). - 18th of January, 2020 The BO of /rand21/ creates a thread called "Post Cat Pictures" but with the two words spoilered to look like CP, as a joke. Users follow with it and posts pics of cats and pedobear, but someone reports it and the global mod ChrisHansen enables Restricted mode on the board. The BO then asks Ron on Twitter to remove it, explaining it was a joke, but he gets no answer. Source: https://archive.is/ozwI3 - 24th and 25th of January, 2020 Since no answer at all comes from Ron, the BO of /rand21/ suggests to move to bunkers as they wait (https://archive.is/TbE9q). But no one will ever reply or remove the restricted mode, so the BO just disables posting and tells Ron to delete the board, as this incompetent move killed it. Source: https://archive.is/jqrHu - 31st of January, 2020 8kun's policy says that BOs lose their boards if they don't log in for two weeks. Ron, though, said it was enough for the vol accounts to login to keep a board. Knowing this, Tenicu lets his vols log in 8kun's /a/ to keep it. But Mark, who manages board claims, decides to ignore this and apply the original policy. On the 31st, he hands /a/ to Kamisama (/animu/'s BO) without even letting it go on claims. He just reassigned it to him. /animu/'s userbase moves over to /a/ on 8kun. Some discussion rises, as 8kun claims that the BO didn't login for over two months, and they wiped the board, which goes against global rules. Tenicu answers back that the wiping was done because the board was entirely spam, to keep it clean, and that Ron told vol login was enough, as already said. Source: https://archive.is/HMbn6 In the end, this drama and wrongly made board reassignment is enough for Tenicu and all /a/ to remain on smuglo and never get back. - 13th of February, 2020 On /v/, Mark stickies a thread about technical issues, to help users voice their complaints. Ron appears in this thread, addressing a mayor issue with network settings that made everything broke. Also, he underlines how project Odin is still underway, just very slowly, and that to have boards migrated users need to email and ask about it or it won't happen. Also, a few popular boards are not migrated yet, and Ron states that the decision "ultimately is to his dad" (Jim) and to go ask him about those, as he does Q & A livestreams on his YT channel every few days. Source: the thread (https://archive.is/7rxeZ). - 27th of February, 2020 HotWheels escapes the Philippines and returns to USA after an arrest order is made against him for cyber crimes. It is demonstrated he organised DDoS attacks against 8kun when it was trying to get back online and held a shaming campaign on twitter against the site and Jim. He also wrote multiple letters to any hosting platform 8kun tried to use, to make them lose it. Source: detailed article on all the story (https://archive.is/rJfvm). - 3rd of April, 2020 Mark has a chat with Jim about the state of 8kun and its future. Jim uses 8kun as a platform to host the Q phenomenon and to sell out his news website, The Goldwater, together with the news articles on /newsplus/ and his social media. He clearly states in the chat that he cares only for that and for him /v/ could be deleted and he wouldn't care. He doesn't seem to care for the site's communities or the userbase outside of Q at all. He writes "fuck v, delete v, i dont pay you for v, post on newsplus". Source: chatlog between Jim and Mark - https://mega.nz/file/4Ip0kSZI#-fpVq-W1lQjz-iasRQzJKta-1dHWiRqtdt6eTf0OE8o -------------------- Both Jim and Ron are reluctant to bring back loli and political themed boards, to avoid public pressuring and more issues with deplatforming. Board creation is disabled to prevent people from doing so until a decision is made. The site is still slow as hell, thanks to the failure in posting and broken captcha. At least, Ron demonstrates to care for the users a bit, by how he at times pops out to tell news on his twitter or in random posts on 8kun. Mark gets worried about the future of the site, talks with a few people and organizes a bunker site in case things go south. --------------------- - 12th of April, 2020 After being ignored more than once by Ron about questions on loli content, the lack of communication or Jim's statements in the talk they had, Mark writes and stickies an open letter on /v/ towards the administration, asking for clarifications. Ron, instead of answering, locks him out of /v/ and fires him from the site team. Source: https://archive.is/EN9hm Ron later explains his reasons: Mark did almost nothing in the past weeks, nor as a reporter on newsplus or as answering any board claim. Most minor boards didn't migrate because of his incompetence (or to be more precise, his pettiness because Ron didn't answer his questions). Also, he discovers he did make the bunker beforehand, and contacted a couple BOs, so Ron considered this enough to kick him from /v/ and put up the board for claims. Sources: Ron's posts (https://archive.is/xpJJH and https://archive.is/KWzpC) and reactions/talk (https://archive.is/SddMM). -------------------- Mark, now kicked from 8kun, wants to move to the bunker, but stuff are not ready yet and he is without a home. Out of pity, /animu/'s BO Kamisama wants to give Mark a temporary board in order to direct /v/ users to a new permanent /v/ run by him. In this deal, Mark has 3 days to set up his board elsewhere and move out. Kamisama asks his userbase about this, and they all protest: no one wants to give even a temporary home to Mark. In the end, it is all useless since even before Kamisama can hear the feedback Mark has already dumped the idea because he "doesn't like the mod tools of Lynxchan". Then, Mark claims Fatchan's /v/, which though gets raided and spammed to death. Mark decides to take a small break and think on how to move next. Meanwhile, Ron posts on 8kun's /v/ saying that lolis are not banned and the board /delicious/ will be brought back in 2 weeks. But this is openly negated by Jim, who during a livestream says that lolis are banned from 8kun as of now. Anons are more and more confused and less trusting in Ron and Jim as they contradict each other. Source: Jim's stream where he talks both about loli content and how Mark leaked his personal chat logs with him (https://archive.org/details/where-do-we-go-from-here). -------------------- - 21st of April, 2020 Ron contacts a lawyer to formally request if posting NSFW lolis is legal or not in the USA. The lawyer answers that it is a grey area and since Ron doesn't wanna risk anything he considers it as no. He posts a flowchart the lawyer made as proof. Lolis are banned from being posted sitewide, and soon every BO receives a PM with instructions to delete and ban loli content and loli posters. Sources: https://archive.is/MzXDL https://archive.is/l4feg https://archive.is/i1j0U Following this, most of /animu/ moves to the bunker at the webring, and a chunk of global mods and BOs of other boards decide that this, together with how Ron kicked Mark out of /v/ just out of pettiness and not for a real reason, is enough to leave. Every /v/ volunteer but one resigns in protest, including the one who wanted to take /v/'s ownership after Mark left (post no.16926185 in https://archive.is/i1j0U). Some reactions from globals and BOs are in this thread (https://archive.is/9H4dq) and in this one too (https://archive.is/27ond). This is the sticky a /v/ volunteer made as a farewell to the site (https://archive.is/jztNZ). Also, /pone/ BO giving up and telling Ron to go fuck himself (https://archive.is/TfGeR). /animu/ thread on /a/ about this, with reactions and talk (https://archive.is/w0hsq). -------------------- Mark gets back from the break and wipes totally Fatchan's /v/ because of the spam, then he dumps the site in a similar fashion as /animu/'s site, since he doesn't like how Fatchan works either. At this point, Fatchan's /v/ is claimed by /v/ users who wish for a new board without Mark. -------------------- - 24th of April, 2020 Smugloli's host receives numerous "abuse reports" about loli from a person called "Esther M. Aronowitz". Interestingly enough, said reports contains mostly totally harmless images, including one of a reclining chair (https://archive.is/6Gelz). Backup servers going up in case of deplatforming. In the end, Smugloli moves its server host to buyvm, which is cool with loli content. Sources: the complaint (https://pastebin.com/veq4rLpU) and the meta thread on it (https://archive.is/iTSaR). - 28th of April, 2020 Robi (the Admin of JulayWorld) reports that his site will be renewed in 7/27/20. It will host less boards than it is now, because Robi understood that centralization is a bad thing for imageboards, as it makes easy to deplatform them all, while the webring, gluing more sites together, is a better solution. He also has a personal burden from moderating places he doesn't visit or like, and he doesn't want to "become Moot 3.0" and dedicate his life to Julay. Robi will keep a small bunch of boards (to be announced in the next few days) and the site will change name. He also gave 3 months for all the other communities to organize and move out, but not only: he also wants to write from scratch a guide "for dummies" about how to make your own imageboard, with a tool that is easy to use. This will let other BOs and anons who want to build their own small site for their community to do it and to join the webring with it. Source: https://archive.is/oE0Vf - 29th of April, 2020 Fatchan is reported by the same Esther of the smuglo reports to its DNS provider for hosting "hate speech" (their dead /pol/ board) and loli content, so it is booted from Voxility. The Admin gives up, and the site closes down (https://archive.is/25CT7). With Fatchan dead, the /v/ anons from there move to Julay /v/ and Julay /meta/. Some of them take refugee on smuglo /vg/ and /tg/, and on Anon.cafe. Others go back to 8kun /v/ to bitch about the state of everything. Mark is still searching for a new home for his /v/ out of 8kun. He first tries to go on 9chan.tw (owned by Josh from KiwiFarms), but he is rejected for some unreasonable requests he makes to Josh (explicitly wanting /v/ as a board name and wanting full admin powers on his board, without Josh being able to interfere at all despite he owns the site). So Mark teams up with Acidman and opens 8chan.moe, which should be "the new 8chan". They also spam this new site in all the /v/ bunkers and on 8kun. Meanwhile, smuglo.li is reported by Esther too to their domain registrar. Since they didn't receive back from the emails sent about the reports, they establish a new domain name at smugloli.net which will be used if the old domain stops resolving (last post in https://archive.is/ViYQC). -------------------- About Esther, other details surface: apparently this person is actively trying to deplatform every alternative to 8kun. First they denounced Josh's 9chan and made him lose various domains, then they went after smuglo.li and Fatchan as already said. Later, they reported 8chan.moe to its domain registrar because of its Admin Acidman, known for his involvement with Gamergate, and made him change domain to 8chan.se. Finally, it surfaces that they also reported JulayWorld's /delicious/ board for loli content. This made Robi unlist the board for a few days until they moved hosts and also take his decision of renewing JulayWorld. Source: Email history between Robi and the old host (bottom of https://archive.is/Y8RJq) and the unlisted board page (https://archive.is/YCMrL). There is the suspicion that behind Esther there might be someone who wants the ring to collapse so anons have to go back to 8kun. It is said it could be even Jim himself or Ron or someone paid by them, but it could also be just someone who wants all of us to sink down, 8kun included. Also, someone points out how the name could be not only fake, but also an inside joke: Esther(molester) M.(Mark) Aronowitz(anon) or Aronowitz(A Ron o' Wits). In the last period, hoppe-sama.xyz and tvch.moe are born as well, and added to the webring. -------------------- - 30th of April, 2020 The domain registrar finally answers to smuglo and agrees the reports of Esther are bullshit, so the domain is not lost. Still, smugloli.net remains as a fallback point in case it is needed. On 8kun, Ron keeps a stable connection with the userbase by posting regularly on the /v/ "let's talk with Ron" cyclical thread. He answers bug reports and tries to make the site work better by reworking most of the JS and the back end of the old spaghetti code 8kun works with. He seems to at least care some about the userbase, but most of anons are honestly fed up with the amount of negligence they showed up in the past. In the thread, Ron also answers about why he kept the silence for months. Because of the successful deplatforming attempts, which are the same that the webring is suffering now. Source (look for post no.16931340): https://archive.is/dCTbX - 2nd of May, 2020 A Radio stream is hosted on anon.cafe involving all the communities from the webring. The idea is to use it as a technical chat/meetup for those looking for help in regards of how to set up their own imageboard. - 3rd of May, 2020 Rob announces which boards will be kept on JulayWorld: /v/, /meta/, /cow/, /k/, /ita/, /tech/, /robowaifu/, /x/, /sw/, /strek/, /retro/, /mu/, /film/ and /jenny/ will remain, others will have to move. In addiction, he says that even after the 3 months deadline he will keep up boards that still has to organize until they are able to move away from Julay. Source: https://archive.is/4mLBi - 5th of May, 2020 Ron keeps staying in touch in the /v/ cyclical thread. He is now working at rewriting all the backend JS for the posting process, in order to gain speed. Sitewide announcements work again. Some new boards are migrated from 8chan as there is now a new person managing claims. The /v/ community doesn't know where to go yet: both on Julay and 8kun posting speeds drop, as most anons wait to see how things will develop and where they will migrate to. The top option would be a new separate site with just /v/ and a few other boards, followed by using 8chan.se's /tg/ as a second option which is not owned by Mark. The /v/ Mark has is currently dead besides the meta thread. Smuglo receives another report for loli content and disables the view of the /a/ loli thread on smuglo.li (keeping it accessible on smugloli.net). Sources: post on it (no.1535 in https://archive.is/vju5S) and the email history (https://pastebin.com/Xes1y9ya https://pastebin.com/UsHK7pKt). - 6th of May, 2020 On 8kun, Ron slowly goes away from the thread, which is made not cyclical anymore. Meanwhile, some users celebrate the loli ban and even encourage to deplatform loli artists. Source: https://archive.is/2gvdE - 10th of May, 2020 The Last of Us 2 has been leaked since a few days now. On JulayWorld, the /v/ BO is questioned and trolled about the decision of banning The Last of Us threads until the release date (June 19th). Reasons behind this being the fact that it is "not a real game, just a movie" and politics talk is not allowed. Some agree saying it is a try to redo GamerGate (and all GG threads are banned on /v/ at this point in time) but others disagree (source: https://archive.is/55Ctg). The BO gets to the point of threatening mass IP banning if the discussion won't cease (https://archive.is/e7m2B). In all the mess, the BO steps down momentarily because he can't handle the stress. He says he might be back in a week (https://hastebin.com/raw/ezufukasoq). HangingFlesh (also known as Weasel), a Global Moderator, picks up the board and, not knowing who to hand it to, hands it to the /2hu/ owner Kimeemaru, also known as Koisheep (who also owns /japan/ on the animu bunker). Kimee boots all the local vols, and makes a meta thread with "no more rulecuckery" in the op, and he states he just enforces global rules, as his approach for free speech is "everything legal is allowed". This is the typical /jp/ approach on moderation, where mods (or "jannies") are quite hated. He also explicitly allows lolis (which were already allowed since there was a thread for it). Source: https://archive.is/eKGgJ On 8chan.moe, /vg/ is being deleted by its owner, as no one wants to go there because of Mark's affiliation with the site (https://archive.is/Hq872). - 11th of May, 2020 On JulayWord's /v/, soon after Kimee has gone to sleep, the meta thread has been posted with quite some lolis, mostly by dolphinfag, who at some point asked to be a vol but Kimee refused (https://archive.is/yVBLL). HangingFlesh chimes in as a global to moderate and starts deleting all loli posts, until he sees people keep posting them so he states that "/v/ is not a loli board" (start of https://pastebin.com/YYyhxR4F). But that just makes anons spam more, so HF deletes the meta thread, along with going on a huge banning spree, all with tons of global bans (https://archive.is/LbD0e https://mega.nz/file/5MgnmKbS#g67w5lReWYqeNlpXO2aX2zc4gS726vqM4j6QtNx-2kg). His reasons are that the no rulecuckery in the op is a huge red flag for pedos to spam CP, and that all the meta thread was a pedo dump. He is also not well informed as he still thinks /delicious/ is behind a torwall for the Esther reports stuff happened some time before, and that allowing lolis on a big board is "a stupid idea" (https://archive.is/svoqS). To be noted, instead of just deleting the loli posts he nuked all the thread. He also claims that lolis are not allowed in the global rules because of how unclear the laws is in the USA about this. He in the end says that the /v/ board is removed from Kimee's ownership until "we can figure out a way it actually gets run". Kimee replies that all this is bullshit since no actual CP was ever posted, just lolis, and all the bans are unfair since Rob allows lolis. HF says back he is not gonna lift the bans, and hands back the board to Kimee once he says he is going to actually moderate it, since he previously mentioned he might not have the time for it. Source: IRC log of all this discussion (https://archive.is/4Sp7D). On the board, the situation devolves into madness as users from most of the site spam both /v/ and also /cow/ with loli posts and Zalgo text that messes up everything in sign of protest (https://archive.is/lmZyU https://archive.is/FuhQr). Kimee makes a thread to announce the situation publicly. Rob pops in, agrees that HangingFlesh fucked up, lifts all the global bans he handled with no real reason as loli is allowed, and tries to restore all the threads that were deleted but only 3 out of the 16 deleted can be saved, since the LynxChan software Julay runs on forces a hard delete of posts immediately, instead of soft-deleting them for a certain amount of days before culling them. Kimee pins a thread explaining it is all solved (https://archive.is/WwMue). Finally, Rob talks with HF on IRC and asks him to actually check things before going on banning sprees without a real reason. He gives him another chance. As of now, /v/ and Julay reputation are quite low as this event is also discussed in other chans (http://archive.is/YpLXL). All in all, not a good time. Sources: the thread Kimee made with Rob's posts (https://archive.is/RsZRX) and the already linked IRC log on all the event in general and with Rob and HF talk (https://pastebin.com/YYyhxR4F). More talk here (https://pastebin.com/ZHfudWYt). - 12th of May, 2020 9chan, which always had a hatred towards Julay for /cow/ board making fun of Josh all the time, raids /v/ and spams CP in there (http://archive.is/YpLXL). Kimee is left alone deleting all of it as HF makes a vague statement about leaving him alone to moderate (https://archive.is/jfU8g) and kicks him out of the Julay IRC (https://archive.is/V87Ch). HF accuses Kimee of being the one who told in the /v/ meta thread that he is the CP poster, even though this is false (http://archive.md/ZoeGn). 9chan's spammers keep posting CP and Kimee stays up all night between 11th and 12th trying to mitigate the damage. Rob, once up, asks for explanations (https://archive.is/Vv47o) and once again sides with HF as there were just communication issues regarding the posts deletion (https://archive.is/QBu8h), and gives HF another chance. Kimee is also falsely accused of having invited a CP cabal to spam it on /v/ on purpose. Kimee replies that this is bullshit and asks for HF/Weasel to be booted, threatening to delete /v/ and cause a mass ruckus if his requests are not met (https://archive.is/VYv7I https://archive.is/RfWSq). He is ignored, and Rob demands that for him to keep /v/ he needs to hire board vols (https://archive.is/jN1rH) which he does. In the end, all this causes just internal drama and damage in reputation for Julay. - 13th of May, 2020 On Julay /v/ the situation gets even worse, as HF keeps moving to /v/ or deleting any thread on /cow/ that talks about this mass drama, making them do it even more (https://archive.is/A2lIo). Robi thinks that behind the /cow/ threads there is Kimee, even though he denies this. Also, someone reported some CP during the mass spam of it the day before to the name registrar. The domain Julay.world is taken down, and moved temporarily to spqrchan.xyz (https://archive.is/qtfNP). Meanwhile, Robi initially revokes Admin permissions from HF for all the mess with the cow threads, but then gives it back just a few hours later (https://archive.is/Sdj9O) as he now believes that both the spam on /cow/ and also the CP were orchestrated by Kimee (https://archive.is/M5jvD https://archive.is/2qvBG). Kimee meanwhile is on to his plan to revenge against all the bullshit: he deletes /v/ as soon as the site gets back up from the takedown (https://archive.is/jcob4). Rob hears all this, restores /v/ and hands it to one of the vols. He begs everyone to just talk about videogames, and to move on. Kimee leaves Julay as he now hates HF and thinks Rob is not a good leader, and gets back to /japan/. All this mess causes the /k/ BO's decision of moving out of julay to setup a new board on anon.cafe (https://archive.is/ySNE6). He allows unspoilered lolis, and this makes HF go on another panic spree on the IRC, saying there is toddlercon on /v/, because "he is sure Rob won't want any more unspoiled lolishit on /v/". An IRC user rejects the accusations as what HF links is not toddlercon, and as an answer he is kicked from the IRC (https://archive.is/UEyDT). This person later DMs with HF stating how he is causing mass drama and distrust in Julay (https://archive.is/tm648). Meanwhile, an unknown BO whose board is coming back in the reboot is about to nuke it (https://archive.is/y96Od https://archive.is/tD4Go). The new /v/ is used by approximately two people because everyone has moved on to an alternative or went back to Mark's site. - 15th of May, 2020 In the meantime, Kimee orchestrates a second, bigger revenge towards Julay and his mods (who keep whining about lolis while the CP spammer is still at it, both on /v/ and /cow/). He sets up a bunker site (https://tengureich.com/v/) and once Notrad has a backup of all the threads he wants to save, Kimee takes back secretly /v/ just to nuke it again (https://archive.is/wKC7f). All the remaining /v/ activity that was on Julay moves to tengureich, which joins the webring. This mess harms trust in Julay completely, as board activity slows down dramatically (https://archive.is/AAMCz) and some even outright leave, like /k/ did. Most of /v/ users now are scattered around and waiting for a /v/ centered website. Rob, seen the situation, opens a thread to hire new janitors (https://archive.is/5pECi). -------------------- There is much more behind this apparently, as a suspected non reliability issue in the administration of Julay (https://archive.is/FYGuC) caused by a supposed infiltration in the IRC of the /grevolt/ people that are close to site staff (https://archive.is/tGnb7). Also, apparently HF can't do wrong in the eyes of Rob no matter how much he whines and does asspulls towards the community like it happened already 3 times at least. Not to mention Acidman's supposed involvement in the CP spam of the last few days because he thinks there is a corruption going on (https://archive.is/ilnHm). Not going to write it all, since it is only tangential to this document. Since the owner doesn't answer, the site will be down until he will or until Kimee finds a new host.
